During Dr. McFarland's many years serving this community, he has provided his medical expertise and vast knowledge to many organizations both within the Las Animas County area and the surrounding counties; all while building his very successful private family practice. Years ago, he served as an emergency room physician once a month at the La Junta Medical Center and Prowers Medical Center in Lamar. He also previously served as the Medical Director of the Health Department Clinic for Children & Youth Project that was located in Trinidad. Dr. McFarland also served for 16 years as Physician Advisor to the Colorado Foundation for Medical Care. Additionally, he served as Assistant Clinical Professor for the Department of Family Medicine at the University of Colorado Health Sciences Center School of Medicine in Denver.
Education
Dr. McFarland received his bachelor's degree in electrical engineering from the University of California at Berkeley. He received his medical degree from Tufts University School of Medicine located in Boston, Massachusetts. Dr. McFarland completed both his internship and residency in family medicine at Southern Colorado Family Medicine located in Pueblo, Colorado.Dr. McFarland speaks some Spanish and is board certified in family medicine.

Dr. McFarland enjoys the challenge of evaluating patients and diagnosing their medical problems. He also enjoys talking with patients and listening to their concerns in order to better help them to recover from illnesses and remain healthy. The wide variety of patients and illnesses in Trinidad has presented many challenges and opportunities for learning about and caring for patients with different diseases. In addition to treating acute and chronic medical diseases, Dr. McFarland frequently encourages patients to maintain healthy lifestyles through diet, exercise, and avoidance of harmful behaviors. He has enjoyed the advantages of living and practicing medicine in a rural community.Dr. McFarland enjoys gardening, auto maintenance, reading, hiking, travelling, attending plays, and listening to music. He also enjoys watching movies and some television programs. Additionally, he enjoys spending time with his family; his wife, three children, and two grandchildren.
